In 2022 The Maitland Hospital closed its doors and relocated to a new facility at Metford. My work as a photographer was to capture the hospital as it was at the end of this chapter. For over 175 years the hospital held people through births and deaths and everything in between. In a space that was often defined by protocol and bureaucracy, it was fascinating to see the clues that told these stories. In the anachronisms and alterations I saw the hospital’s history, in decorations and personal touches I saw people’s creativity, resourcefulness, their sense of humour and the values they shared. In the people who worked at the old Maitland Hospital, I saw their dedication, how much they cared and their unique contributions.
